How to get your drivers license the first time.

Getting your driver’s license first time around is easy if you know how to conduct yourself during the test. By the time you come to taking the test, you will have had enough experience on the road to be a safe, confident driver however a lot of the time people fail their driver’s tests because they are too nervous and stressed about passing that they make silly mistakes which prove to be very costly.

You driving instructor should give you a detailed over view of what to expect during your driver’s test, such as the area in which the test will be conducted, the types of examiners, your best skills and what you need to watch out for. It is important to pay attention to this so you can practice thoroughly and be prepared for anything examiners may throw at you. Also it pays to be familiar with the exact car you will be tested in as you may be tested on locating the dash features prior to starting. Knowing how to find the indicators, headlights, wipers and horn are imperative. Being well prepared is the best way to ensure you won’t get nervous and make mistakes.

The most common instant fail errors made by tested drivers are caused by minor lapses in concentration due to nerves. It is important to maintain concentration the entire time your examiner is in the car. It will probably be very silent in the car during your test which makes a lot of drivers uncomfortable however, it is important to know that this silence is meant to allow you to focus solely on the road. Concentrating on the road and driving is all you should be worried about, not what the examiner might be thinking, so don’t be distracted by car silences.

During your test you also need to be decisive. Decision making on the road is an imperative skill to safe driving, and you will be tested on it, so make sure that during your test you’re confident enough to make decisions based on the current road situation. Hesitating or second guessing yourself leads to extra stress and unnecessary nervousness, so you need to be confident enough to make decision so there are no issues surrounding your driving skill.

Despite common thinking, at times driving too slowly can actually be a road hazard. Your instructor would have advised to drive a few km p/h under the designated speed limit, which is good advice however you need to make sure you don’t drive too slowly. Examiners will be looking out for drivers who sit too far below the speed limits as it can indicate lack of ability and control of your vehicle. Having said that you also need to make sure you don’t drive too fast. On Australian roads now days it is common to encounter changing speed zones within a short distance, so you need to make sure you are concentrating on the speed limit in that particular area as it is often subject to change quite quickly. Making sure you are aware of the school zone and construction site speed laws is also imperative as these areas are subject to changing speed limits which can often go unnoticed, meaning you might go over the designated speed limit during your test.

If you listen to the directions of your examiner during your test and concentrate at all times, not focussing on the silences or presence of the examiner you will find it much easier to pass your driver’s license test.  Passing your license test is easy if you are well prepared as thorough preparation leads to confidence and confidence is key when undertaking your driver’s license test.
